The Fire element manifests in the Summer. The seeds that were sown in the spring have grown and now reach their maximum potential. The pale greens of spring give way to the deeper colors of summer. Plants flower and reach fruition. The power of the Fire Element is Maturity. The ability to grow and bring your ideas, your relationships, and yourself to fulfillment.

In summer we revel in the warmth of the sun, enjoying the outdoors and communing with nature and loved ones. The warmth of summer continues in the warmth of our Spirits. We feel friendship and connection with others. This is not only love of family and friends, but divine love, the love that shines like a divine spark in all of us. Unconditional love. When we feel that spark in ourselves and recognize it in others, we feel the highest joy and love possible. There is understanding, kindness, generosity.  When our fire is imbalanced, we may feel unable to connect to others. We may feel joyless and alone and that there is no fun in life. We may compensate by making life an endless party and end up exhausting ourselves and those around us out. We may become “burned out.”

On the physical level, Fire goes with the heart, which in Chinese medicine is considered the benevolent, loving ruler of the kingdom of the body, mind and spirit. Associated with the heart is the small intestine which sorts through everything and only lets in the pure on all levels. The heart also has a heart protector that knows who to let in or not. The triple heater is like a thermostat that regulates temperature on all levels and responds appropriately to meet the tasks at hand. Together they know when and with whom we can be warm and open, and when and with whom we needs to be more protective.

On a mental level, the fire element lights up the mind. It gives us a keen and lively intelligence and the ability to sort things out and see right to the heart of a matter. Fire gives us enthusiasm for ideas. We feel bright.

When our fire element is strong, we can let people into our hearts, we have give and take in our communication of our thoughts and feelings. We share our love and joy with others. We develop understanding.

How is your fire?

  1. Do you connect well with people?
  2. Are you broken-hearted? Are you lonely?
  3. Are you enthusiastic about your work?
  4. Are you having any fun?
  5. Who do you love and how do you show it? Who loves you?
