The first visit to my office is a time for both of us, patient and practitioner, to get to know each other. It is two hours long and includes an interview and treatment. In the interview I will learn about your medical history, current complaint and personal history. I will take your pulses, which will give me information about the state of your chi and reveal any energy blocks. In addition, I will analyze your facial color, vocal sound, emotional tone, and even odor to determine the underlying cause of your condition. From this information, I will develop a treatment plan unique to you, the patient.

For your first visit, it is important that you:

* Refrain from wearing make-up, cologne, scented deodorants, or heavily scented soaps.

* Bring names and phones numbers of your primary care physician and any other health care practitioners you are currently seeing.

* Bring a list of medications you are currently taking.

Acupuncture works best when done consistently until you are feeling better. This will vary depending on the duration and severity of the illness and the lifestyle and other factors that are contributing to it. Typically, treatments are given once a week for 4 to 6 weeks and then spread to 2 weeks, 3 weeks and monthly as healing progress is made.

Once health is regained a program of maintenance is decided upon. Classical Five-Element Acupuncture is a preventative system of medicine as well as a curative one and it is recommended that patients come in for periodic tune-ups. The pulses can often reveal if anything is going wrong even before it manifests as symptoms. Ideally, only seasonal treatments are necessary to maintain good health. Most of us take our cars in for regular maintenance and our bodies and health should not receive any less care.

To experience the fullest healing of any condition requires a commitment from you to receive treatment and change factors in your life that prevent you from achieving a more balanced state. Regular treatment will help you to make these necessary changes.

Diet and lifestyle must be taken into account for good health. Adequate amounts of water, good healthy food, regular exercise and sufficient rest will extend the benefits of the treatment and enrich your life. Remember, health is not just the absence of disease, it is the state of well-being.

The day of a treatment, it is important to refrain from coffee, alcohol and strenuous exercise both before and after treatment.
